Managing Director
Richard ‘Rich’ Bates joined Security by Design in 2007 following his training as an electrical engineer and service with the Royal Engineers, including an attachment to The Royal Marines.
Starting his career with Security by Design as an engineer, Rich progressed through hands-on experience while earning his NVQ in Security Systems and Technical Services. In 2014, he became a Director, and he now serves as Managing Director & Owner, overseeing all operations and driving the strategic direction of the company.
With extensive technical knowledge and leadership experience, Rich is able to manage any project or enquiry from initial consultation to final delivery, providing clients with expert guidance and solutions tailored to their needs.
Outside of work, Rich enjoys coaching rugby, spending time with his children, and walking his two dogs.
Operations and Engineering Lead
Phil plays a crucial role in managing our engineering team while seamlessly coordinating with clients and manufacturers. With an extensive background in security engineering, he brings a wealth of product knowledge and a sharp problem-solving mindset to every challenge.
With over 15 years of industry experience, Phil is the go-to expert for all operational and engineering aspects. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time in nature—whether fishing, camping, or tackling hands-on projects that showcase his passion for building and design.

Kirsty brings a diverse and well-rounded skill set to her role as PA and Office Manager, underpinned by years of experience in clinical, recruitment, and management roles within the NHS. Her background in healthcare has given her a deep understanding of people management and operational efficiency, which she has successfully translated into the private sector.
Having worked in NHS recruitment and clinical services, Kirsty combines compassionate leadership with strategic insight, ensuring robust HR practices and compliance. Her proficiency in managing accounts further strengthens her role, allowing her to oversee financial operations with precision and integrity. Kirsty's unique blend of healthcare, recruitment, and financial expertise makes her a key asset in driving both people and business performance
